January Virtual Meeting: “Reach Codes” and the War Against Natural Gas with Lonnie Haughton, MCP
January 14, 2021 @ 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm
$10
Multiple jurisdictions in the Bay Area recently have adopted ordinances that totally ban (or severely limit) the use of gas-fired equipment in new construction. Some of these cities and towns currently have targeted only new residential housing while they continue to study how to implement similar bans for new commercial buildings. The greatly differing approaches of example jurisdictions, including the cities of Berkeley and Richmond and the town of Windsor, to “reach” their visions of an all-electric future will be examined. Proponents of such “reach codes” tend to cite greenhouse gasses and global warming to justify such dramatic changes. Opponents tend to cite California’s already-strained electrical grid and various additional benefits, flexibilities, and overall resilience afforded by the use of gas-fired equipment.
