February Virtual Meeting: Veteran Firefighter Kevin Spellman

On a typical house, inspectors will report on many fire hazards observed during the inspection – but what is the difference between a perceived fire danger and a real one? Are home inspectors basing their recommendations on lore, or data and experience? Veteran firefighter Captain Kevin Spellman will lead a discussion on residential fire dangers, WUI information, as well as sharing experiences from the Oakland Hills and Paradise fires.
5:30pm Login and Socialize Join a few minutes early to sort out technical issues and chat with your fellow inspectors.
6:00pm Pre-Meeting Chapter member David Pagano will have a slideshow and discussion about conditions that are commonly found during inspections, and how to report on them. (Attendees with earn an additional ASHI CE)
7:00pm Chapter Meeting During dinner, chapter president Paul Barraza will lead a short business meeting to cover chapter and ASHI business, committee reports, and upcoming educational opportunities.

Kevin Spellman received an AS degree in Fire Technology from Butte College and worked in the forestry service for 3 years before moving to the Bay Area and beginning a 31-year tenure with the San Rafael Fire Department. During his time with the department, he worked as both a paramedic and firefighter before eventually retiring at the rank of Captain in 2012. Aside from his normal duties, Kevin was responsible for introducing and instructing the D.A.R.T. (Disaster Assistance Response Team) program for the city of San Rafael and received the title of Certified Fire Inspector through the California State Fire Marshall’s Office. Throughout his career he was apart of strike teams that fought some of the state’s most notorious wildfires.
